AIS

Home / Glossary / AIS

The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a mandatory, GPS-based tracking system for large vessels, including many commercial fishing boats, that broadcasts real-time data like position, speed, course, and identity.

AIS is used to improve collision avoidance and maritime safety; it works via terrestrial and satellite networks, providing crucial data for navigation, port management, and tracking fishing effort, though its effectiveness for small vessels or remote areas can vary, and data can sometimes be incomplete or manipulated.

The CodeIT Traceland Legal Landing project has the capability to use AIS data.
