🟠Getting the wood industry data-driven, one step at a time
Ahead of Wood Products and Technology 2026 in Gothenburg, we sat down with Inge Stenvoll, Senior Sales Engineer at CodeIT to talk about what it actually takes for a wood producer to become data-driven, where AI is making a real difference today, and what CodeIT is bringing to the show.
What is the first step for a company that wants to become more data-driven?
Start using the data you already have. Most companies in the wood industry generate production data every day, but they lack the systems to collect it, connect it, and act on it.
In practice that means three things.
First, your systems need to talk to each other: production systems, business systems, and control systems. Right now it's common to have data scattered across different systems with no connection between them, and that creates inefficiency and real risks of incorrect labeling.
Second, centralize your master data. One place for product information, orders, and specifications, so it flows correctly through production.
Third, implement real-time monitoring. An OEE solution lets managers and shift workers see uptime, spot bottlenecks, and act on maintenance before problems happen.
Most companies have too many manual processes and don't have the right tools in place yet. The solution isn't complicated. It's about building systems that actually use the data you're already generating.
Where do you see AI making a real difference in the timber industry today?
AI is having a concrete impact in a few specific areas.
Raw material optimization is one. Vision systems with AI help you maximize yield from each log through intelligent steering and cutting, which means real waste reduction. Then there's quality control and automation, where AI and robotics can take over risky, repetitive work. That improves safety and frees up people for more skilled tasks, and customer service, where AI can power better support systems and automated documentation.
The important thing to understand is that we see AI as a tool for efficiency, not as a goal in itself. It's about applying the technology where it actually creates business value.
