Backstory
In three short months, April to June 2025, the CodeIT Group (see info box) sequentially installed their new universal OEE system in 9 factories belonging to leading food producer Lantmännen Cerealia (see info box). Six months later, we agreed with Demis Karciauskas, Head of Safety, Quality & Operational Excellence at Lantmannen Cerealia, that Bjørnar Torsnes, CodeIT Group Chairman, along with Emil Malmsten, CodeIT Application Engineer and OEE system specialist, should meet with Pleurat Kaloshi, Continuous Improvement Manager, Lantmännen Cerealia Norway, and Geir Borch Gullbrandsen, Production Manager, Lantmännen Cerealia Moss (one of the 9 factories) to get an update on how things are going with the new system. Read on to discover what they found out. Spoiler alert! â the customer is very happy. Pleurat Kaloshi smiles and says the OEE system âis like putting a Fitness Tracker on each production line. It gives you the facts you need to focus, set priorities and take action.â
It meets all the customerâs needs
The new universal CodeIT OEE System is CodeITâs second generation OEE system (see info box). The application has been developed in close cooperation with Lantmännen Cerealia, a longstanding customer of CodeIT. The decision to use OEE measurement as a tool to set goals and focus on continuous improvement is deeply rooted in Lantmännen Cerealiaâs top management. Their objective is a single OEE system for all sites. Now CodeIT OEE System is in place and fully operational. The new OEE system is used by Lantmännen Cerealia on a daily basis in 9 factories in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. The new OEE system takes into account all the wants and needs from Lantmännen Cerealiaâs continuous improvement teamâs OEE needs. It combines the best of the best from the teamâs wish lists, and previous experience from other OEE solutions and industries.

It gives payback
Has productivity increased? Yes! Pleurat and Plant Manager Geir Borch Gullbrandsen proudly disclose âas a result of the system, as is, we are able set focus on specific areas and make priorities that have resulted in increased productivity. In particular for our high-liners, our products with the most volume.â They go on to say they use the new system in the factory on a daily basis and have built up structure around it. It is used in daily management meetings. It is used for reporting centrally. Pleurat adds they have also been able to make important adjustments to parameters in their M3 ERP that came to light after implementation of the OEE system and concludes âAll-in-all, the new system is robust and inspires confidence. With it, we know where we stand. It gives us the facts we need to make decisions and focus, fast.â
It is flexible and scalable
Each factory has been able to fine tune the system to suit their particular needs. By way of example, in Finland they found the easy to manage user-driven language support very handy. In their country, they have to run the system in four languages for their operators, and that includes using the Cyrillic alphabet. Looking forward, as users gain experience with the CodeIT OEE System they may, like Pleurat, identify new features to benefit a given workflow. With the new CodeIT OEE System we do something about it. We have a dynamic Road Map to incorporate new features and capabilities requested by customers as they embrace the full potential of the OEE system. Pleurat is already looking forward with anticipation to new features he has requested.

The new universal CodeIT OEE System tracks production and when there is a discrepancy you use it to trace the root cause. This traceability aspect creates involvement between departments. At Lantmännen Cerealia an operator registers any stoppages directly in the OEE system. Then the Technical Department get involved and register a sub-category (technical error, set-up error, operator error, etc.) and initiate necessary follow up: Does equipment A need maintenance B? Is packaging C used out of spec D? Is there a need for operator E to have more training F? This is how the system enables you to track, trace and eliminate root causes of discrepancies.
It increases productivity in other areas
The new universal CodeIT OEE System gives you the facts you need to focus, set priorities and take action in production. But it isnât exclusively for the production department. OEE data from the CodeIT OEE System enables other departments in the factory, like Engineering to set focus, prioritize and take action. It is used locally in daily management meetings. It is used for reporting centrally. Lantmännen Cerealiaâs planning department now use data from it in their budgeting processes. To paraphrase what we were told, with it âeveryone is singing from the same sheet of music!â

In addition to workstation touch screens, to provide a clearly visible focal point for everyone in the factory, Lantmännen Cerealia is rolling out strategically placed digital screens in their factories for visual daily management. These big-screens are always on, showing an easy to understand graphical live view of the siteâs performance in real time. They inform and motivate.
âThe OEE system functions like a soccer score dashboard, offering a clear overview of our productivity status and what still needs to be accomplished to meet our daily targets. It naturally motivates all team members, including operators, maintenance teams, and leaders, to take proactive actions on any deviations. Currently, our plant managers participate in friendly competition across countries with identical production lines, where we also share best practices to achieve optimal OEE results.â
It delivers dependable data
It was pointed out to us that if you ever had to work with OEE data you suspected might be corrupt or otherwise unreliable, the peace-of-mind the CodeIT OEE System gives is very much appreciated. - OEE stands for Overall Equipment Effectiveness and is a popular methodology used to measure the effectiveness of production equipment with three KPIs: 1) availability, 2) performance and 3) quality.
- These KPIs are used to analyze and improve production, where 1) availability is affected by all types of stops, 2) performance is measured against an ideal speed per item, and 3) quality is measured by comparing produced and approved products.
